Wellcome Genome Campus Thornton Building Hinxton, Cambridgeshire
SWH acted as BREEAM Assessor and Accredited Professionals (AP) from midway through this project, providing a smooth transition and supporting various sustainability and carbon reduction measures that were implemented and achieved an Excellent rating.
This project involved the construction of a new office space for research at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Cambridgeshire. The newly constructed building has provided the staff with an ideal environment for research, containing areas for individual work, communal collaboration and for socialising.
Scott White and Hookins were engaged in this project as BREEAM Assessor and AP midway through the design process, taking over from another assessor organisation. We worked to ensure a comfortable transition between assessors and that necessary actions to meet early stage sustainability commitments were clearly defined and successfully implemented, throughout construction.
Valuable sustainability measures implemented on this scheme included the inclusion of PVs and ASHPs, to minimise the building's operational carbon emissions, and constructing using a timber frame to reduce the building's embodied carbon. The team had considered embodied carbon throughout the process, so were able to identify the design measures that would minimise the embodied impact of the building structure and the surrounding landscaping.
The development has also maximised the provision of healthy outside space, by providing dynamic landscaped areas to benefit the occupant's health and wellbeing whilst enhancing the site's biodiversity.
