Waitrose and John Lewis at Home Horsham
SWH provided civil and structural engineering services for Waitrose and John Lewis at Home retail unit to be built on a complex site
A new Waitrose supermarket with an attached John Lewis at Home store was constructed on a sloping site with the River Arun on the southern boundary.
The natural slope of the land enabled parking below the Waitrose store with two levels of parking adjacent to the John Lewis store. Concrete retaining walls were formed around three sides of the undercroft parking area.
The structure was a composite steel frame with in-situ concrete floors on profiled metal decking.
Foundations were traditional spread bases, founded on the Upper Tunbridge Wells Sand formation.
The development also required the diversion of a major Southern Water sewer under a S185 Agreement.
