Squires Mews Care Home Northampton
SWH acted as BREEAM Assessors and as BREEAM Advisory Professional (AP) for both the design and construction stage of the care home's development.
We are delighted with the high scores achieved across a number of sections including ecology and transport, whilst keeping resident comfort at the forefront of any decisions.
This new 59-bed care home, in Northampton, is operated by Avery Healthcare, and includes various communal spaces and in-house amenities, including a cinema, a hair salon and communal lounge spaces, in addition to dining rooms.
Scott White and Hookins were appointed as BREEAM Assessors and BREEAM AP for the duration of the scheme. We helped to ensure the sustainability aims were achieved within the design, without compromising the needs of care home residents and staff, or other general project demands.
Aesthetically, the building is brick masonry externally, which is relatively understand and in keeping with the surrounding residential area.
Resident comfort is at the forefront of a project of this nature. Subsequently, the project scored strongly within visual comfort and thermal comfort credit areas, owing to the considerate design of lighting layouts and controls, and thermal zoning and controls.
Desire to curate an enjoyable external environment for residents also resulted in strong scoring within the Ecology section. Retained trees and considerate planting has preserved and enhanced ecological value on the site, as well as providing visually pleasing surroundings.
High scoring was achieved in the Transport section too.
The development utilises Combined Heat and Power, whereby bi-product heat from power generation is captured and used for heating purposes throughout the building- a recommendation from the Low-Zero Carbon Technology Feasibility Study.
