Ruperra Castle and Estate Caerphilly
SWH provided Ruperra Conservation Trust with a comprehensive transport strategy, sympathetic to the vulnerabilities of this heritage site.
We were approached by the Ruperra Conservation Trust to assist with their objectives, which are to preserve for the benefit of all visitors the historical, architectural and constructional heritage that exists in and around Ruperra Castle, near Caerphilly.
Our role was to write a Transport Strategy for the site which reflected the unique setting of the Castle and estate, and set out the challenges, opportunities and threats posed by different approaches to providing access to this Scheduled Ancient Monument.
The Strategy set out the site context in terms of access by all modes, and sought to examine how a heritage-led country park use could be feasibly accommodated without damage or detriment to the vulnerable historic site and context, without causing excessive traffic levels on the rural roads around the site.
Strategic consideration of pedestrian, cycle, bus (park and ride) and disabled car parking access were all considered as part of the published report.
