Project Profile

Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Croydon Hospital

SWH provided structural engineering services for the refurbishment and a new single storey extension for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Croydon Hospital.

Working on a new Paediatric Intensive Care Unit for Croydon Hospital was an important and meaningful project to be involved in.

The new unit was built between two existing refurbished Victorian wards blocks. The extension comprised a single steel frame building, with full plantroom capacity at roof level.

In addition, three children's play areas were created as part of the development. These were built utilising a Rhino external raised floor deck.

With a historic hospital to work within, the site was both complex and congested, with deep made ground and multiple existing below ground services, including existing and new underground drainage to work around.

The refurbishment element involved development of a 3 and 4 storey Victorian ward block. These had large openings in structural walls, with wards continuing to be in use just above.

In recognition of the careful refurbishment work as part of this project, it was chosen as Winner of the Refurbishment Project category at the Structural Engineering Awards 2022, awarded by the Institution of Structural Engineering South Eastern Counties Regional Group.
