Capel Manor College - Phase 1 Mottingham, London
We were delighted to support the development of these beautiful, sustainable learning spaces, in our role as BREEAM Accredited Professionals (AP). This was a project that put student and staff health and wellbeing at the heart of every decision.
Capel Manor College, a vocational agricultural college in London, undergoing a major redevelopment to improve the quality and sustainability of their teaching spaces. As part of this phase, two new buildings were constructed; one block to house the new reception area and additional teaching spaces, and another to house new classrooms and teach laboratory.
This project transformed the site from what previously contained outdated and dysfunctional buildings, to create beautiful, sustainable learning spaces which complement the agricultural and sustainable values of the college.
Scott White and Hookins engaged with the project team to maximise the sustainability of the development and provide further support throughout construction as BREEAM AP. The scheme involved the construction of the two new timber structured buildings which championed sustainable design. The buildings are predominantly naturally ventilated and are installed with PVs to minimise the building's energy demand. Furthermore, the team procured materials from manufacturers with documented responsible sourcing certification to ensure a healthy supply chain, and have designed an elaborate landscaping plan with native species to maximise the site's biodiversity gain.
The team has put the student and staff health and wellbeing at the heart of the development by ensuring all learning spaces contain low VOC emitting products, have high levels of natural lighting, and allowing for the dynamic control of artificial lighting.
