Our History
60 years of SWH
Since its formation in 1963, Scott White and Hookins (SWH) has grown, matured and developed into one of the leading practices in the UK.
We are focussed on innovation and progress, positively tackling the challenges and responsibilities we have within the broad construction industry and across all of our sectors.
Today, SWH is managed by five Board Directors, employing over sixty staff, with three regional offices in Bedford, London (Sutton) and Winchester, providing civil and structural engineering and related services.

1963
SWH is Formed
The partnership was formed on 1st July 1963 by Ray Scott-White and Barrie Hookins. The original office was set up above the Mitcham Building Society on the High Street, in Mitcham, London.
1971
Bedford Office Opens
In July, Scott White and Hookins (SWH) opens its first regional office in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, to service a growing workload in the Midlands and East Anglia. This is followed by a new office in Carshalton
1975
Bahrain Office Opens
SWH has an office in Bahrain opens and remains for the next 2 years.
1981
Winchester Office Opens
We open another regional office in Winchester, Hampshire.
1982
London House
Our South London office moves to London House, West Street, Carshalton.
1987
Fountain House
Our Bedfordshire office relocates to its current address, Fountain House, in Bedford.
1988
Harman House
Our Winchester office moves to its current address, Harman House, Andover Road.
1991
Quality Assurance with BSi
SWH becomes one of the first structural engineering consultancies in the UK to be accredited to BS5750:Part 1 for Quality Assurance with BSi.
1994
CDM Services
SW&H Health and Safety Limited forms to provide CDM services and advice on construction related health and safety matters.
1996

Our first website launches on 14th February 1996 with our easy to remember three letter address – www.swh.co.uk
1999
Approved Inspectors
SW&H Services Ltd approved by Secretary of State for the Environment as an Approved Inspector, in respect of building regulations.
2003
Investors in People
SWH achieves Investors in People (IIP) accreditation.
2004
Construction Skills Certification Scheme
All SWH technical staff become qualified under the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).
2006
BREEAM
SWH starts providing BREEAM assessment services.
2008
ISO 9001
SWH accredited to latest Quality Standard ISO9001:2008.
2010
A Top 50 Employer
SWH named as one of the Top 50 Employers for 2010 in The Good Employer’s Guide, published by Building Magazine.
2013
Limited Liability Partnership
SWH changes to a Limited Liability Partnership and becomes Scott White and Hookins LLP.
2013
50th Anniversary
SWH celebrates 50 years in business.
2015
Sutton Bound
Our South London office moves to Sutton.
2016
Top 100 Civil Engineering Practices
SWH ranks in the top 100 civil engineering practices in the UK, by New Civil Engineer.
2017
ISO 14001
SWH accredited to latest Environmental Management Standard ISO14001:2015.
2022
SW&H Limited
SWH becomes a limited company, SW&H Limited.
2023
60th Anniversary
SWH celebrates 60 years in business.
